At Miers Court, we are passionate about protecting our planet and promoting sustainability. Our Eco Council is very active in initiating and leading projects to make our school, local community and wider world a greener, cleaner and more sustainable place. We believe that small actions can make a big difference – together we are making our world a better place for ourselves and for generations to come.

Read on to find out about our campaigns and projects – and our successes, too!

Recycling Projects

We currently recycle the following:

  • Soft plastics (including crisp packets and bread wrappers)
  • Domestic ink cartridges
  • Batteries

Please send these items into school for recycling. In the New Year, we will collect empty sweet tubs, which are recycled All proceeds from the recycled plastic tubs will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support.

Big Battery Hunt

We are part of the Duracell ‘Big Battery Hunt’! Each week we count up how many batteries we have collected and add the number to the national running total.

Please send your used batteries into school.

Ask your family and friends and bring theirs in too!

Litter Picking

We work with a rota system for litter-picking; each week, a different year group is responsible for collecting litter from the school grounds.  The litter is sorted so that card and plastic is recycled.

Living Streets

We encourage people to come to school in an active way - instead of driving - to prevent air pollution.  We try to make the world a better place and keep our planet clean.

The children sign in online on the ‘Living Streets’ website three times a week to record how they travelled to school.  If you walk, cycle or scoot, you are looking after the world and not polluting the air.  At the end of each term the children get a badge for coming to school in an active way … or part of the way, at least.

Kent Garden Show 'Butterfly' Display

Miers Court entered the Kent Garden Show Competition this year, which aimed to teach people about how important butterflies are to our world. We learnt about how vital butterflies are to our eco-system.  Each year group submitted an entry and the children worked really hard together to create an information board. We are very proud of them and, as you can see from the photographs below, they are pretty fabulous!

We were awarded £150 overall for our entries! We are going to spend the money on plants for our flower beds … to attract more butterflies!

Awards and Achievements

THAT Staff Awards

We are really proud and pleased to have been awarded the Greenest School award at the THAT Staff Awards, for the second year in a row! This is recognition of the effort that the whole school community puts into helping to look after our local community, and to promote sustainability. Well done, everyone!

Rainham Community Awards

We are really excited to have won several awards at the Rainham Community Awards over the years. In September 2025, we attended St Margaret's Church, where we won even more!

In recognition of the amazing poetry, art and DT work that the children produced as part of our Earth Week celebrations around the theme of ‘Our Power - Our Planet', we were judged overall winners of the Young Eco Creative School of the Year in the Primary Schools Category. In addition, Rory W won 'best poem' in the primary school category - well done, Rory!

We are especially excited to have been awarded the Environment and Sustainability Shield, for the second year running.  This is an amazing achievement, which recognises the passion and commitment the children have to understanding the fragility of our planet and finding ways to protect it.  The judges were particularly impressed by our range of projects (recycling, gardening, litter-picking, 'walk-to-school' initiative, 'Butterfly-friendly Competition', energy-saving campaign ...) and also by the level of engagement across the school and our wider community.
