We have had such a fun time celebrating Book Week 2026 here at Miers Court. Each phase has been focusing on a specific book and using this as inspiration for their reading and writing, as well as enjoying some additional book-based opportunities!
Phase 1 (Year R and Year 1) have been focusing on the book, ‘The Forest of Dreams’ by Merve Atilgan.

Phase 2 (Years 2, 3 and 4) have
been focusing on ‘Flotsam’
by David Wiesner.

Phase 3 (Years 5 & 6) have been focusing
on ‘The Viewer’ by Shaun Tan
and Gary Crew.

Dance and Movement Workshops
On Monday, everyone began the week by doing some dance and movement sessions based on the themes of their books. This included enchanted yoga, under the sea dances and one of Mrs Ridley’s expertly choreographed workshops. Good fun was had by all!

Author Visit!
On Wednesday, we were lucky enough to welcome back published author Gianna Pollero, who did workshops with the children based on her ‘Monster Doughnut’ series of books.
Gianna talked to the children about being an author, and how long it takes her to write and publish a book. She also encouraged them to work together to create a new character for a new story. She focussed on the character's age, name, background, likes and dislikes and showed the children how these ideas can create not only the character but the story as well.
Gianna challenged the children to use this character and create their own story, something that a lot of the children were very excited about.
Book Fair
On Thursday, we welcomed back our travelling book fair, and have been really encouraged to see just how many of our families have been excited about making a visit. We will post an update on our social media pages once the fair has finished and the profit has been calculated. All the profit will be used to purchase yet more wonderful books for the school, so thank you to everyone for the support!

Extreme Reader
We have had some truly fantastic ideas and entries to this year’s ‘Extreme Reader’ photo competition. In fact, they are so tremendous that it has been simply too hard to choose any individual winners. Instead, all of our entrants will get to enjoy a hot chocolate and biscuits in the library with Mrs Papandrea and Mrs Ridley. Take a look at the fantastic entries!
Dress as a Word!
A super time was had by all as we celebrated wonderful words with our themed dress-up day. It was a pleasure to see so many fantastic costumes and these acted as the inspiration for lots of vocabulary-rich discussion! We had ‘magical’ wizards, ‘mischievous’ anti-heroes, ‘sleepy’ princesses and many, many more. We even managed to do a parade so that everyone could enjoy each other’s costumes. Of course, the staff couldn’t resist joining in too!
The Masked Reader

This week, we will be featuring some mysterious guests on our social media channels. Each day, Monday to Thursday, we will be posting a video of a masked reader reading a famous text. We would love for you to play along by guessing the staff member and the name of the book that they are reading from! You will also be able to find each day’s video posted here, too. Don’t worry, we have some clues to help you along the way…
